DURING THE FLIGHT
As dogs and cats
are living creatures they demand the same sort of comfort and attention that
we expect.
The cargo compartments
in all aircraft are temperature controlled and pressurised, ensuring that your
pet travels under the best possible conditions and circumstances.
Cats and dogs are
carried in these specially designed cargo compartments.
SOME HANDY TIPS
Dogs and cats feel
much happier traveling in a special crate or sky kennel. We supply specially
designed containers in a variety of sizes, meeting the official international
veterinarian and airline requirements.
It is important
to choose the correct size container for your animal. You can supply our office
with
measurements of your pets (height: from the floor to the highest point on the
dog’s head – and length –
from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail). This will help us ensure
that we supply you with the correct
size container.
If you are using
your own container, you will need to ensure that the container is airline (IATA)
approved. Our staff will be glad to assist you.
Your pet may not
be used to being shut up in a crate or sky kennel. Accustom your pet to his
container a few days before travel by allowing him to sleep in it, or by feeding
him in it. A favorite toy or small blanket will also make him feel more at home,
relaxed and at ease. Five days are usually enough for any pet to become accustomed
to staying in a crate. And they often enjoy it as well!
For your pet’s
safety and comfort, the following are NOT allowed to travel with the pets: bulky
cushions,
baskets, bowls, brushes, shampoos, bags of food, choke chains (or collars if
they are not used to it).
You want your pet
to arrive in a good condition. Remember that cats and dogs can sometimes suffer
from travel sickness - so be careful about feeding them. Give them a light,
easily digest able meal the evening before, or no later than 4 hours before
the flight leaves. This will avoid upset tummies during the flight.
Exercising him before
loading will minimize the risk of him fouling his container or becoming travel
sick. Dogs and cats will generally avoid messing in the crate, but if they have
relieved themselves properly before departure, it is easier for them to keep
the crate clean.
We do not recommend
tranquilizing pets for the trip, but for nervous travelers, we would recommend
Rescue Remedy. This is a herbal product with no side effects. The drops are
easier to administer, and can be given orally, or in the pet’s water (make
sure they will drink the rescue water before the trip, though), and it can also
be rubbed onto the tips of their ears, nose and mouth or under the paws. Start
using the Rescue Remedy couple of days prior to departure, as it works faster
if it is in their system.
We will attach your
pet's name and feeding instructions on the side of the crate or sky kennel.
This is a great help to our animal attendants, because calling a pet by his
name can be very comforting.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO PLANNING THIS TRIP WITH YOU!
